  • The General Motors of Canada Automotive Centre of Excellence (ACE) is the first commercial automotive research, development and innovation centre of its kind in the world. Industry, researchers and students collaborate and create, test and validate paradigm-shifting innovations with a focus on bringing them to market as rapidly as possible. Among its many key design and testing features, the 16,300-square-metre centre is home to a climatic wind tunnel with extreme weather capabilities.
  • UOIT is one of three Canadian universities to be selected for EcoCAR: The NeXt Challenge. The team is led by Dr. G Rohrauer, with additional faculty advisors Dr. M. Eklund, Dr. M. Ham and Dr. R. Milman. The EcoCAR Challenge is a student engineering competition that allows universities, automakers, the government and advanced technology companies to collaborate with students across North America to achieve more fuel efficient vehicles.
  • UOIT has one of the highest rates of professors with PhDs among Canadian universities and these academic leaders collectively speak more than 20 languages and have earned degrees in more than 20 countries.
  • UOIT has the only undergraduate degree in Nuclear Engineering in Canada.

UOIT Fast Facts

Location:   UOIT is located in the Greater Toronto Area in the City of Oshawa which is an easy drive or bus/train ride to downtown Toronto. Toronto is Canada's largest city and business capital, a metropolitan area whose population is one of the most diverse in the world, where nearly all of the world's cultural groups are represented and more than 100 languages and dialects are spoken. History: UOIT officially came into being on June 27, 2002, and in September 2003, it welcomed its first class of 947 students. By September 2009, its award-winning campus had grown to just over 6,500 undergraduate and graduate students driven by a common desire for excellence and innovation.

School Type: UOIT is a public university in
Ontario and a member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. As Ontario's first laptop based university, UOIT is a leader among North American universities in implementing and using course and industry specific software for laptop learning. This means you will graduate with the high tech skills that are in demand in the new economy.

Academic Programs and Rankings: UOIT offers 30 undergraduate degree programs, two consecutive education programs, and graduate programs both at the

Professors actively participate in both federal and provincial centres of excellence including
Auto21, Advanced Foods and Materials Networks, and Ontario Centres of Excellence for Materials and Manufacturing, Energy, and Communications and Information Technology.

Research: In 6 years, UOIT has generated 52 invention disclosures, 14 patents pending, 2 IP licences and 1 start up company. Funding since inception in 2003 is in excess of $26.2 million - 2008/09 research funding exceeded $8.1 million. UOIT has
partnerships with a wide variety of companies including General Motors of Canada, Ontario Power Generation, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, Bell Canada, Durham Strategic Energy Alliance, Hospital for Sick Children, Lakeridge Health, local school boards and many more.

Application Process: International English Testing System (IELTS or equivalent) with a minimum score of 6.5 in each skill/category; if application document(s) originate(s) in whole or in part outside of Canada, documents must be translated into English and must have had a foreign evaluation completed; Documentation sent must either be original or a notarized photocopy of original documentation. A stamp or seal must appear on the photocopy along with the seal of a Notary Public and the date and information pertaining to the Notary Public (name, title and address).

Important dates for 2011/2012: Fall: September 8 – December 7, 2011; Winter: January 2 – April 12 2012; Spring/Summer: May 7 – June 20, 2012.
