Location:   With a population of over 100,000 Sydney has all the amenities of a big city, and the warmth and hospitality of a small town. Located on the eastern side of Cape Breton Island, Sydney is the best of both worlds. It is steeped in a rich cultural heritage yet is also serves a modern and innovative business community. In 2008, Cape Breton Island was ranked among the Top 10 Islands in the World by Travel Leisure Magazine, as well as being previously ranked the #2 Sustainable Tourism Destination by National Geographic Traveller Magazine.

History: In 1974, the first university college in Canada was established on Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia through an amalgamation of the Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology and Xavier Junior College. The Xavier Junior College was affiliated previously with St Francis Xavier University.

School Type: The University College of Cape Breton is a public degree-granting institution, and retains technical and vocational programs from the former Nova Scotia Eastern Institute of Technology.

Student Body: Cape Breton University has a population of more the 3400 students. The School of Science & Technology has more than 70 faculty and staff member with some 500 plus students studying in science and engineering programs.

Research: The establishment of the Centre for Sustainability in Energy & Environment (CSEE) is a major part of CBU’s commitment to growth in research, specifically in efforts to balance needs for new sources of energy and increasing environmental sustainability. With public and private investment, construction on the CSEE began in 2010 and when completed in 2011 will provide the university the opportunity to conduct world-class research in pure and social sciences in a facility designed to seek innovative and sustainable solutions to energy and environmental issues. Research partnerships include major multi-national corporate entities including Exxon Mobil, IBM, Duke Energy, and Shell Oil.

Application Process: Five GCE or GCSE subjects including English and at least two subjects at the advanced level, and will be assessed on a country by country basis. Official transcripts (a complete academic record bearing the original signature of the Registrar and the official seal of the university), or notarized copies must be submitted with the application for admission. Students must also have an IELTS score (or equivalent) of 6.5 with no band below 6.0 . A $100 fee must accompany all applications.
