SAIT Fast Facts

Location: SAIT Polytechnic is located on Calgary's LRT system, putting the downtown and city-wide malls within convenient commuting distances. The North Hill Mall is a five-minute walk from campus, and downtown is a 10 -minute LRT ride away.

History: SAIT Polytechnic has a rich history, beginning with its creation as the Provincial Institute of Technology and Art (PITA) in 1916. The first publicly-funded technical institute in Canada, PITA was initially housed at the Colonel James Walker School and the adjacent police and fire station in southeast Calgary. From its earliest days, PITA focused on hands-on, skills-oriented training designed to meet the practical needs of employers, a philosophy that continues to this day.

School Type: SAIT is the first publicly funded technical institute in Canada, established in 1916.

Facilities and Future Plans: SAIT’s newest campus, the Art Smith Aero Centre for Training and Technology, features many specialized labs, a large hangar and an array of aircraft including a Boeing 737-200 and a Bombardier Challenger 601-3. In 2009, SAIT embarked on the largest expansion in its history: construction of a $445 million Trades and Technology Complex. The facility is scheduled for completion in 2012.

Student Body: Average class size of 27 students; More than 150,000 alumni in 55 countries.

Academic Programs and Rankings: SAIT offers over 100 programs for International Students to choose from:

Faculty and Staff: More than 2,200 faculty and staff providing training to more than 70,000 registrants annually

Important dates for 2011/2012: Fall: September 6 to December 16, 2011; Winter: January 9 to April 27, 2012; Spring/Summer: May 7 to August 17, 2012

Scholarships: $3.5 million in scholarships and bursaries awarded annually to more than 2,800 students.

Application Process: International English Testing System (IELTS or equivalent) with a minimum score of 6.0 in each skill/category; if application document(s) originate(s) in whole or in part outside of Canada, documents must be translated into English and must have had a foreign evaluation completed; all transcripts must be colour scans; $50.00 non-refundable application fee if applying online or $200.00 non-refundable application fee if applying on paper.
