Kwantlen Fast Facts

Location: Newton Centre (population 91,595), Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

History: Kwantlen Polytechnic University was formed by splitting from Douglas College in 1981 and became Kwantlen University College, a degree-granting institution, in 1995. "Kwantlen" means "tireless runner" and is derived from the First Nations people who established their home in the region served by Kwantlen.

School Type: Kwantlen is a public university fully accredited by the Ministry of Advanced Education in the province of British Columbia.

Campus: Kwantlen has four modern, high-tech, campuses located in the rapidly expanding South Fraser region of BC's Lower Mainland. More than 17,000 students annually attend Kwantlen campuses in Surrey, Richmond and Langley. In 2007, the new Cloverdale Trades and Technology Centre opened, replacing the trades training campus in Newton.

Facilities and Future Plans: State-of-the-art studios and labs; $94.9-million of expansion and new facilities between 2005-2009, including the new Cloverdale Trades and Technology Centre and research facilities for the Institute of Sustainable Horticulture; $16-million committed in endowments

Student Body: More than 17,500 students annually; over 9,000 full time students annually; over 2,200 credentials awarded annually; over 200,000 students educated at Kwantlen to date.

Academic Programs and Rankings: More than 120 diverse programs - degrees, diplomas, certificates and citations

Faculty and Staff: More than 1,600 faculty and staff, with 239 faculty members involved in active research; Four research institutes with 30 sponsored research projects.

Important dates for 2011/2012: Tuesday, September 6 – first day of Fall semester; Monday, January 9 – first day of Spring semester

Application Process: Materials needed for admission include an application, essay and certified transcripts; IELTS Academic Module score of 6.0 with a minimum band of 6 (or equivalent);
