Memorial University of Newfoundland Fast Facts

Students: Memorial is the largest university in the region, with 17,500 students engaged in full and part-time studies at under-graduate and graduate levels.

Alumni: Each year, the graduating class numbers in excess of 2,000 students, bringing the total number of alumni to more than 68,000.

Faculty and Staff: The university employs 950 full-time faculty (and 850 sessional instructors) and 2,300 administrative and support staff, plus 2,000 students in part-time jobs.

Founded: 1925 (as Memorial University College; granted university status in 1949)

Campus: Main campus and Marine Institute (MI), St. John's

Programs: Undergraduate; Course-based master's programs in computer engineering, environmental systems engineering, oil and gas engineering, and engineering management are available.

Academic year: Sept. 1 - Aug. 31; three 14-week semesters; also 6-week inter-session and 6-week summer session.

Research: Memorial's research efforts, to a large degree, take advantage of their adaptation to the mid-North Atlantic location that has shaped its culture and studies.

Within the Faculty of Engineering, you will work in exceptional facilities including the Instrumentation, Control and Automation (INCA) Laboratory, the Manufacturing Technology Centre, the Computer Engineering Research Laboratories, the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory, the Wave Tank, the Environmental Laboratory, the Intelligent Systems Laboratory (ISLab) and the Thermo-Fluids Laboratory. Their students also have access to world-class engineering facilities and laboratories located on the Memorial campus, including the National Research Council Institute for Ocean Technology, the geotechnical centrifuge at C-CORE, and the process engineering laboratories at the Inco Innovation Centre.
